Over ten years ago, a small self-defense unit in the Pryazovia region began a journey that has led it to the status of a full military corps today. The 12th Special Forces Brigade "Azov" gained fame as one of Ukraine's most combat-ready military units, and in the spring of 2025, the 1st National Guard Corps "Azov" (1st NGU Corps) was formed on its foundation — an operational-tactical formation that now includes several NGU brigades. Thus, a unit that started as a battalion has grown into a major military group under the same name and symbol.

Combat Path
"Azov" was founded on May 5, 2014, in Berdyansk as a special police battalion. Soon after, on June 13, 2014, its fighters achieved their first major victory by liberating Mariupol from pro-russian militants. That same summer, the unit participated in the liberation of Marinka, and in the winter of 2015, carried out the successful Pavlopil-Shyrokyne offensive, pushing the frontline away from Mariupol. On November 11, 2014, "Azov" was incorporated into the National Guard of Ukraine, acquiring its own artillery and armored units.

The hardest trial came with the defense of Mariupol in the spring of 2022: for 86 days, the brigade's fighters held off overwhelming enemy forces, destroying over 3,500 enemy soldiers and a significant amount of equipment. Hundreds of defenders entered captivity at that time, and some remain there today. Following 2022, "Azov" was expanded into the full-fledged 12th Special Forces Brigade, and on March 7, 2025, the 1st NGU Corps "Azov" was established on its foundation — a testament to how much the unit has grown and strengthened in recent years.

Symbolism
The "Azov" emblem is a stylized combination of the letters "I" and "N", standing for "Idea of the Nation" (Idea Natsii). The sharp, aggressive lines of the symbol convey the determination, offensive spirit, and steadfastness of its fighters in battle. We apply this exact sign to the cover using deep heat embossing.
