The history of Ukrainian statehood features symbols that have endured for centuries and remain significant today. One of them is the Trident. It was chosen as the coat of arms of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918, linking the young Ukrainian state to the tradition of the Kyiv Rus’ of the time of Volodymyr the Great.

On January 6, 1918, the trident appeared on the first banknote of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, with a denomination of 100 karbovanets, and on February 25, 1918, it was officially adopted as the state coat of arms of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

Later, the Trident continued to be used in state and military symbols, and after Ukraine lost its statehood, it became one of the symbols of the Ukrainians’ struggle for freedom. The UNR government-in-exile also used this symbol on seals, documents, and other state insignia.
